HNRS1010:

Gateway to University Honors

Anchor 1
What is Gateway?

Gateway to University Honors (HNRS1010) is a course meant to help develop students into global citizen scholar who lead innovative efforts toward solving the world’s complex problem. Within the course, students are asked to complete and participate in several activities that are meant to help them discover their passion, gifts and talents. They learn ways to engage and get involved in experiential learning opportunities. Additionally, students are able to maximize, deepen and integrate their learning through reflection.

What have I learned from Gateway?
Gateway to University Honors (HNRS1010) has allowed me to get a better understanding of who I am and what I am really good at. For instance, thanks to the CliftonStrengths, I learned more about and deepened my understanding of my greatest strengths and talents. Reflecting on the results I acquired provided me with a true insight into the core reasons behind my successes. I was able to see times when my strengths and talents were manifested in my life. For example, take the time when I had an impact on Accessibility Resources, at the University of Cincinnati.

After being hired and working there for a few weeks, I started noticing how several processes could be improved and made more efficient. My Restorative strength led to try and find ways to fix them. From the way files were being stored (both physically and digitally) to how the cabinets were ordered, I felt the need and desire to solve some of the office’s problems. Soon after, I started feeling like it was my responsibility to fix it, mine and mine alone. After taking psychological ownership of solving the matter, I became emotionally bound to solving it. Therefore, after several discussions, my supervisor gave me his approval to make changes to what I thought would be beneficial to the office. That is when I started identifying exactly what was wrong, reflected on it before attempting to find a solution to fix the problem. Although faced with a difficult and complex task, I was driven by my desire to find solutions. I deeply enjoyed identifying the undermining factor(s), learning how to eradicate them, and restoring things to their true glory. For instance, among other things, I managed to create a new filing system for the entire office. Had I not had that desire and drive to complete this unpleasant task, things would have remained as they were. By being goal driven, taking some initiatives and accepting ownership, I was able to make a difference.

In a nutshell, thanks to what I have learned in this course, I am going to continue to make an impact in my community and the world. I am going to be using my strengths and talents to my advantage.

First and foremost, I am going to continue to try and solve some of the world’s complex problems by making an impact and a difference wherever I go.

Second, I am going to continue learning as I am drawn by its process. More than the content or the result, learning is especially exciting for me. The thrill of the finding out new facts, the effort of practicing what I have learned or the growing confidence of a skill mastered entices me. Therefore, with this strength, I am going to continue getting engaged and thriving in dynamic and complex work environments.

Finally, I am going to continue to take psychological ownership of anything I commit to. Whether large or small, I am going to do my best and try hard to solve any task I am given or issue I am facing, as I feel emotionally bound to follow it through to completion. To me, apologies are not enough. Excuses and rationalizations are totally unacceptable. I believe that when it comes to commitment and making a difference, one needs to “go big or go home,” “commit entirely or do not commit at all.” This is what drives me to make a difference in the world around me.

Problem Pitch

Elevator_Pitch_outline-512.png

Our team (The Security Squad) chose to focus on the importance of protecting your personal information in today’s world.

On the one hand, we agreed that more people need to become aware of the fact that cyber-attacks do not only target big corporations but everyday people as well. By neglecting to secure and protect their personal information or by carelessly sharing sensitive information, people can unintentionally allow themselves to become potential targets and, eventually, victims of a cyber-attack.

On the other hand, we determined that people lack the proper tools and the knowledge they need to be able to protect their personal information. For instance, by downloading random programs (or software) and accepting unknown/unread Terms & Policies, people could unintentionally agree to allow a company to share their personal information.

Therefore, we decided to investigate the type attacks conducted on college students (and everyday people) and learn more about the reason why they are so successful. Click the link on your right to see our final presentation.

CliftonStrength Test

Many of us tend to live our lives without ever tapping into our unique strenghts and talents. By completing the CliftonStrength Test, an online assessment, you are able to receive insights that will change the way you work and will impact the rest of your life. You will get to discover what makes you exceptional.

After taking the test, I discovered that my greatest top 5 strengths and talents were:

- Restorative

- Relator

- Learner

- Achiever

- Responsibility

I was not really surprised by the results I got. If anything, it accurately described who I was, what I liked and believed in. For instance, I already knew that I loved solving problems. To me , there is no greater feeling than being given a complex problem, identifying what is wrong, and finding the solution to it. I enjoy being able to restore something to its true glory. Additionally, I was already aware of the fact that I am an overachiever. I have a constant need for achievement. To me, by the end of the day —regardless of whether it is workdays, weekends, or vacations, I must achieve something tangible to feel good about myself. In a way, this is the power supply that causes me to set the pace and define the levels of productivity for any work group I am on. It is what keeps me moving.

In a nutshell, the results I got did not take me by surprise. More than anything else, they accurately described the kind of person I am. If you wish to see my results, please click here:

My Top 5 Values

Artboard_14-512.png

The UHP Values Activity helped me discovered that my top 5 values were:

- Spirituality/Religion

- Loyalty

- Dignity

- Family

- Honor

Although complex, this activity helped me learn a lot about myself. It was initially difficult to pick 10 values from a pool containing several values that I believed accurately described who I am and what I believe in. Having to narrow those choices to 5 became even harder. It was near impossible to determine which value gets picked and which ones gets dropped.

However, after reflecting on my choices, I was able to determine which values mattered more, which ones were at the core of my success. To determine this, I had to spend time thinking about and reflecting on times when and how often the value was applied in my life. This allowed me to determine which of the 10 values I picked stood out and ultimately, know which ones mattered more to me.

In a nutshell, although this activity was complex and difficult, it allowed to reflect on my life, my morals and my values. Thanks to that reflection, I now know what my top 5 values are, what they mean to me and how they are or were applied in my life.
